State Historical Society Cultural Heritage Center 900 Governors Drive Pierre, South Dakota 57501 605-773-3458 Premier museum on South Dakota history at the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center. The 15,000 sq. ft. gallery exhibit The South Dakota Experience covers the state from prehistory through the 20th century. Visitors can walk through a Sioux summer tipi, hear homesteader’s stories in a sod house, and design a 20th-century bungalow kitchen. They can listen to a creation story in Lakota, milk a model cow, and listen in on party line phone calls. Exhibit won an Award of Merit from the American Association for State and Local History in 2006.
